Increasing Atomic Number Doesnt Always Increase Mass

Since atomic number is the number of protons in an  atom  and atomic mass is the mass of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom, it seems intuitively obvious that increasing the number of protons would increase the atomic mass. However, if you look at the atomic masses on a periodic table, you will see that cobalt (atomic No. 27) is more massive than nickel (atomic No. 28). Uranium (No. 92) is more massive than neptunium (No.93). Different periodic tables even list different numbers for atomic masses. Whats up with that, anyway? Read on for a quick explanation. Neutrons and Protons Not Equal The reason increasing atomic number doesnt always equate to increasing mass is because many atoms dont have the same number of neutrons and protons. In other words, several isotopes of an element may exist. Size Matters If a sizeable portion of an element of lower atomic number exists in the form of heavy isotopes, then the mass of that element may (overall) be heavier than that of the next element. If there were no isotopes and all elements had a number of neutrons equal to the number of protons, then atomic mass would be approximately twice the atomic number. (This is only an approximation because protons and neutrons dont have exactly the same mass, but  the mass of electrons is so small that it is negligible.) Different periodic tables give differing atomic masses because the percentages of isotopes of an element may be considered changed from one publication to another.

Strategy of Business Model Innovation

Question: Discuss about the Strategy of Business Model Innovation. Answer: Synopsis and Application of What is Strategy? Here is a discussion of what strategy is and what is not. Today we will read about some strategy documents documented from real time companies. The strategy of a company is to provide on low costs working on a global level The strategy is also for providing a set of regional acquisitions. The strategy is also to provide unparalleled customer services. One has to be the first mover in every aspect. The main strategy is to move from defense to industrial apps. What have they in common? None of them are strategies. They are goals, tactics and objectives. They can be said to be small goals which is a part of an overall objective. The word strategy is more like a buzzword misused and overtly used by companies and individuals when making presentations or proposals. Now the questions still remains that then what is basically a strategy? To answer this let us first understand what not a strategy is. The word strategy comes from a Greek word Strategos signifying the art of the general. It was basically associated with the techniques used by a general in a war in olden times. A good strategy provides answer to the following four questions Who is our competition? By this it can be said what competitive markets or arena one will be active in. By market is meant, industries, product markets within those industries and geographic markets. Why will the customer choose your product and services instead of others? By this is meant what is the unique value the product or the services brings in that makes them win. Unique value can be cost or differentiation in terms of looks, appearance, images, customizations, design, reliability and many more What resources are used to deliver this value? By this it asks whether we have exceptional human capital, superior tech or unraveling net connections or unique reputation. Resources generally are tangible things that we have in our toolbox. They can also be intangible like reputation. Capability is our ability to use such resources to create a value. How can one sustain to keep on providing that value? This last question asks focus on understanding what are the factors that help us keep winning over time (Kryscynski, D). Application of Strategy The application of this term and the use of strategical values for the matter of growth of a company is applicable to every organization known today. Every company today makes strategies; however, the more important point to be considered is that how the strategy is made and how it is applied to the working of a company. I would like to apply this mode of Strategy to the Bakery around my region. Although the Bakery is able to offer some exceptional products; however, it is not able to reach out to the maximum number of customers, given the competition. Hence, it is important for the Bakery to reach out to the maximum number of customers in the region. Video 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4ZSGQW0UMI Business Model Innovation: The video primarily focuses on the need for Business Model Innovation. It has been pointed out that even corporates such as Nokia and Kodak lose their edge because they fail to gather proper RD resources, top employees and profound knowledge of the market in question. Also, the most common mistake done by all of them was the fact that they all left the time when they should have left their success path and reached out for a new Business Model. Innovation either increases the customer value of service or decreases the cost. In both the cases, the company gets a competitive advantage when it leads a path towards innovation. Some misconceptions about innovation include: Innovation stems from ideas that no one has ever thought about before Big success calls for big resources It is based on fascinating technologies An innovative business model gives answers to 4 important questions: What is the target customer? What is offered to the customer? How is the value proposition created? How revenue is generated? An innovative model may change, answers to any two questions given above may change as well. The video shows the presence of 55 business model patterns. Some of these include, flat rate, supermarket, experience selling and ecommerce etc. The razor and blade pattern has been applied by many companies known today. In order to proceed with the business innovation, the four most important steps that should be included are initiation, ideation, integration and implementation. After the pilot is launched, every company must do a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the pilot in order to understand the problems that may arise in future. Some important rules to be considered include application of one business model at a time, clearly communicating the need for innovation, emphasis should be on long term returns only and top management commitment should be accounted as well (HSG, 2013). Application of Innovative Business Model: A number of companies have applied innovative business models in the past. Companies such as Samsung require the need for the application of RD business model to innovate new products so as to meet the competition proposed by the smartphone and tablets market. The company may consider the application of the model with respect to a dedicated set of RD department with some top employees who understand the intricacies of the market and can work towards the development of the plan. Taking this into consideration, the company will be able to put together a comfortable plan to give a new set of products to the market that are competitive enough to take down the other competitors such as Apple and Amazon Kindle. Hence, the company needs to work towards the development of new ideas which either take down the prices or help it increase the value for money being provided to the market in general. Samsung has recorded lesser number of sales in varied markets as compared to other competitors and hence it needs to work towards a different business model that rejuvenates the faith of the people in the brand after consistent complaints about the hanging of the smartphones after much use of apps. pretty picture Essays - True Respect, Dover Air Force Base

Not a Pretty Picture After reading ?Not a Pretty Picture? by Sydney H. Schanberg the outlook on war and how we as Americans get to view it for me has changed. If war is necessary then why do we shrink away from looking at the damage it causes? The government is trying to keep the bad side of war from Americans, but is shielding us from the bad side allowing us to make an informed decision on how we feel about the war. They ask us to respect those who die, but how can we have true respect for them when we can?t really grasp what they have been through. The fact that the government doesn?t allow cameras to film the amount of coffins that are unloaded everyday at the Dover Air Force Base is wrong. Americans have the right to see the outcome of the war that our soldiers are fighting. I get protecting the family?s privacy then just don?t include names, showing the coffins would have the impact that was needed. Blocking us from viewing the funeral of these soldiers is understandable, but maybe we should at least get a death count. Some might say that we are dishonoring the soldiers that have died by not recognizing them as they are coming home. What is the government trying to hide when they won?t let the press use pictures from the war of the dead and wounded. These are the type of pictures Americans need to see so we have a better appreciation for what happens in the war. By trying to hide these pictures some may say it?s the government?s way of keeping Americans in the dark. If they?re omitting certain pictures it makes you wonder what else they are leaving out of the news. We as Americans have the right to know the whole truth. Let us decide if something is too much for us or not, giving us the option to turn off the TV or closing the magazine if the images bother us. The government claims that anyone that questions the war are disloyal Americans, is insane. How we feel about the war one way or another says nothing about what type of Americans we are. Some would say being a loyal American you would want to know everything about the war good and bad. We should want journals to tell us everything that happens over there so we can get a feel for what the soldiers have to go through. The government is ?afraid of an outcry against the war, an outcry that could bring down the administration? (483). This is the last thing the government wants to happen, so they?re trying to make us feel guilty for wanting to know what is going on with the war. In the long run does the government have the right to shield us from the war? Don?t us as Americans deserve the right to decide what is too much for us to look at or hear. The presses job is to get us the news and let us have the chance to choose to turn off the TV or put down the magazine. Keeping the horror of war from us is a dishonor to those who are over there fighting in the war. Everyone?s view on too much violent is different so why not let each person decide for themselves. Letting us know the numbers of deaths by showing us how many comes home each day is a great way to honor those who have died.

10 Great Study Tips for Students - EssaySupply.com

10 Great Study Tips for Students 10 Great Study Tips for Students Create a Comfortable Yet Business Like Space to Study If you grew up like many other students, you may have been taught that the ideal study spot is barren and isolated. Old logic said that the place that you studied must be quiet, well lit, away from distractions, and that any background noise was strictly forbidden. Hogwash! Blaring music and leaving your door open to visitors might not be a good idea, however there is nothing wrong or damaging with wanting to study with background music or with people nearby. Tackle the Hard Tasks First Before you begin studying, take a survey of the things you need to work on. Ask yourself which items stand out as being tedious, difficult, or time consuming. Then, focus on those tasks first. After that, you can work through all of the other items on your list with relative ease. After all, you have knocked out the ugliest task. Don't Forget SQ3R Do you remember learning this in elementary school. SQ3R stood for survey, question, read, recite, and review. In other words you survey the textbook to get a basic idea of what you should know, you develop a set of questions about what you will learn, you read the text thoroughly, and then you verbally answer those questions. Finally, you review your notes. Only Study Until You Know the Subject Matter Studying a concept that you already know doesn't make you understand things more, it just steals the chance for you to work on other subjects or just relax. In addition to this, scheduling snack breaks is a perfect way to give yourself the opportunity to step away from your work for a brief period of time. Then, when your break is over you can start studying again with a refreshed state of mind. Recruit a Good Study Partner Studying in pairs can be a great idea. There was another study conducted in 2004 by Lancaster University, which suggested that switching to train system from the private car or airlines travelling has no significant advantages in terms of environment protection. However, there was an environmental group â€Å"friends of the earth†, who had opposite views regarding the shift and they were not satisfied with the findings of the study conducted by the university (Marston, 2004). They made another study, which revealed that the train system lacked in the modern advancement that had been made for the vehicles and airline industries in terms of better fuel consumption and efficient use of the fuel. A train that travels from London to Edinburgh uses 11.5 liters excess fuel per person as compared to the latest cars working on diesel; and similarly, the trains of Pendolino consumed more fuel per person than the airbus A380 (ABD, 2012). There are some other detailed studies that have concluded that there is a negative and opposite relation between the urban population density and energy consumption per capita. With the help of public transit system, the high urban population densities can be benefited easily and as an inverse relation the use of energy to run the system will be low and the travelling distance will be reduced. Green movements members always are in favor of public transportation because of high benefits in term of less contamination and low pollution than any other travelling system. In 2004, there was a study carried out in the city of Milan, Italy that unveiled the impact of mass transportation on the environment on a day of public transportation strike. Legally Blonde Essay Example for Free

Legally Blonde Essay Stereotypes are assumptions made about a group of people based on commonalities shared among that group. These assumptions normally have to do with religion, ethnicity, cultural values, and even outward appearances. One of the common reasons stereotypes exist is that it is easy to identify individuals without interacting with them. A person can identify a face and immediately categorize him or her based on information derived from upbringing, past experiences, and the media. Some labels have the capability of harming individuals who are judged based on appearances or nationality. These stereotypes can lead to the mistreatment and prejudices against a particular group of people. For example, after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, a religious group called the Sihks have been attacked on numerous occasions because they were mislabeled as terrorists (NPR). Stereotyping can start at a young age when children are taught to make assumptions. For example, a mother will caution her child not to talk to any strangers. This can lay a foundation for future stereotypes. The child may grow up to be a person who stereotypes and who is prejudice. The child may not know that the assumptions being made rarely apply to each member of a group. Even though there are examples of dumb blondes, many intelligent blondes do exist. Diane Sawyer is a prominent figure in the world of news. In 1984, she broke new ground as the first woman to work as a correspondent on the award-winning news magazine 60 Minutes (Bio. True Story). She also has blonde hair. This proves that stereotypes do not apply to everyone of a certain group. Some common examples of stereotypes are people who wear glasses are nerds or all Asians are very intelligent. One of the most commonly known stereotype is the dumb blonde persona. It has been presented in film, music and even in literature. Not only is the blonde stereotype being represented in the media, but also in marketing. There is a shampoo made by Bed Head called Dumb Blonde. The blonde’s label states that the lack of intelligence is based on hair color. This leads the blonde to be depicted to rely on looks rather than intelligence to be successful in life. Many jokes are made based on the stereotype as well. An example is â€Å"What do you call a fly buzzing inside a blondes head? A Space Invader. † (Cracked. com). In the sitcom Three’s Company, a blonde character named Chrissy is ditzy and gets a lot of attention from many groups of men. She is easy to confuse and is quick to fall for men. The media takes the blonde label and dramatizes it with the persona of Chrissy. One of the most famous blondes that seems to fit the stereotype is Paris Hilton. She has been quoted as saying many outrageous statements such as, â€Å"I don’t really think, I just walk. † (Brainy Quote). She is successful at exploiting the dumb blonde persona. Another statement said by Hilton is, â€Å"I get half a million just to show up at parties. My life is, like, really, really fun. † (Brainy Quote). Hilton uses her dumb blonde character in order to get farther in life. With an in depth look into Paris Hilton it may be found that she possesses more intelligence than what she portrays. It is known that she is an American heiress, socialite, television personality, fashion designer, model, actress, producer, author, and singer. Paris Hilton is a good example of the dumb blonde. She gives people the idea that all blondes are like her, when in reality, they are not. From the sitcom Three’s Company in 1977, to the rich and famous Hollywood star Paris Hilton, the dumb blonde can be found almost anywhere. However, the media is taking small steps to counter represent the blonde. In the 2001 movie Legally Blonde, the main character Elle Woods evolves from the stereotypical blonde to a Harvard Law graduate. In the beginning, she was the president of her sorority, had a pet Chihuahua and majored in fashion merchandising. She states, Two weeks ago I saw Cameron Diaz at Fred Segal, and I talked her out of buying this truly heinous angora sweater. Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed! (Legally Blonde). She then applied to Harvard Law School with an application video that showed her in a bikini with her and her friends. Surprisingly, she was immediately accepted and later graduated with high honors. In Legally Blonde, Elle displays her intelligence by solving a murder in an unconventional way. This movie does show the classic stereotypes of blondes in the beginning but then turns it around to make the blonde an intelligent honors student who goes on to be a successful attorney. Stereotypes can be stopped by preventing assumptions or getting to know someone instead of pre-judging them. It should be understood that stereotypes rarely apply to everyone of that group. The media can reduce stereotypes by ignoring them instead of marketing them. By making characters who portray their stereotype, audiences come to believe that the label applies to everyone in a particular group. If the stereotype is not represented at all, it can help the general public forget that stereotypes ever existed. Everyone has the capability of putting stereotypes to rest, it is just a matter of having an open mind. An example can be set to others and soon stereotypes will come to an end. Jourody Journey of Homers Odyssey, Joyces Ulysses and Walcotts Omer

The Journey of Homer's Odyssey, Joyce's Ulysses and Walcott's Omeros      Ã‚   This essay explores how the theme of the journey, pervasive in Homer's Odyssey, find expression in James Joyce's Ulysses (1922) and Derrick Walcott's Omeros (1990), epics written in very different historical periods.   Common to all three epics is a plot structure that involves a protagonist who longs for home but who must first endure a life-altering change before he returns. The theme of the "journey" provokes an image of both a natural and spiritual quest occurring simultaneously, both significantly viable because each passage contributes equally to the manifestation of the maturing male identity.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Homer's Odyssey, captures the essence of the "journey", a word signifying the movement from one place to another, by juxtaposing Odysseus's palpable journey against his spiritual one. Odysseus attempts to navigate at sea the ships and crew from Troy to Ithaca while a number of nymphs and demons make obstacles that impede his success. Both visible and invisible, the journeys produce a change in Odysseus that ensure his maturity into manhood before he returns to his wife, Penelope, in Ithaca.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Odysseus's journey begins at home where a summons to war prompts him to leave Ithaca for Troy. Odysseus and Penelope have a newborn son they name Telemachus. The war lasts ten years. Ending when Odysseus leaves a belly full of soldiers in a wooden horse at the beach before the enemy's compound. Thinking it a gift from the Greeks, the Trojan's roll it in and before dawn, a final siege occurs that ends the war. Smug and accomplished about the downfall, Odysseus sets sail for Ithaca. Laboratory Equipment and Bunsen Burner

Carson Drollery Partner: Adam Lineman Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to 1. Test your lab skills for accuracy. 2. Also to know what the safety rules of lab are. 3. Lastly to be able to name and Identify la element Procedure: See lab skills lab IPPP-28. Stetsons:l . The hottest part of the flame Is the tip of the Inner blue cone of the flame 2. If your flame is to yellow orange or sotto black you have to adjust the air vent of the Bunsen burner. 3.In lab I learned how to test my skills for accuracy I know how to do this in that when weighing objects the closer you were to the actual weight the more accurate you were. In lab I also learned what the safety rules are some examples of the safety rules are safety goggles should be worn at all times, when mixing water and acid mix acid into water and always turn the burner off when it is not in use. In lab I also learned how to able and identify lab equipment some examples of lab equipment that we used in this lab were a Bunsen burner, graduated cylinder and a flint striker. In lab I was able to successfully light the Bunsen burner using a flint striker. I was also able to create an inner blue cone within the flame of the Bunsen burner. I was also able to successfully zero the balance and record the mass of the objects to the correct number of significant figures. I was also able to successfully transfer the liquids correctly as well as read the measurements of the graduated wielders and burette and find the displacement volume of the graduated cylinders.I was also able to filter the a salt and water mixture and a sand and water mixture to figure out which one was soluble and which one was insoluble. Lastly I was able to bend the glass tubing to a 90 degree angle read the temperature . 1 degrees C. Sources of error that could of occurred were not having the balance perfectly zeroed out, having an object that did not weigh what it was supposed to, or holding the glass tubing in the flame to long or too low within th e flame.

Toreilla Flat essays

Toreilla Flat essays In the town of Tortilla Flat above beautiful Monterey lived a group of men called the paisanos. They were drunkards, thieves, ruffians, and vagabonds, but they were also surprisingly good at heart; requiring little more from life than friendship and a little wine. Among these paisanos were Danny, Pilon, Pablo, Jesus Maria, and Big Joe Portagee. When the First World War broke out, these paisanos decided to enlist in a fir of drunken patriotism. None of them actually made it anywhere near combat, and soon returned to Monterey to find it more or less as they had left it. One thing was different however, Danny's grandfather had died and left Danny two houses. Pilon is the first to find Danny after the war, and Danny allows his friend to rent the other house from him. Gradually, the rest of the group turns up, and Pilon convinces them to rent rooms in the second house. One night, after a good amount of wine, the house burns down, and though Danny is angry at first, he allows the friends to move in with him. At Danny's house, they form a group, which Steinbeck often compares to the Knights of the Round Table. Indeed, they engage in many quests, some noble, and some downright sinful, enjoying companionship and the comfort of a roof to the fullest. Most of the group's quests revolve around the acquisition of money, but in one case, they find a new friend instead. There was a paisano in town named the Pirate who was somewhat slow witted. He could be seen walking the streets and perusing the restaurants for scraps with his five dogs (his best friends and protectors). He chopped wood every day and sold it for a quarter in town. Pilon noticed that the Pirate never spent any money, and deduced that he must be hiding it somewhere. Pilon follows the bum all over trying to locate the stash, going so far as to invite him to stay in Danny's house so that they can keep a better watch over him. In living with the pirate, the friends grow compass...

Uses of Dispose

Uses of Dispose Uses of Dispose Uses of Dispose By Maeve Maddox Ed Buckner writes: In my work, people often use the word dispose when referring to solid waste. Â  My issue is that many people want to append the preposition of to the word dispose as in, the company disposed of the hazardous waste. This does not seem correct to me, yet I have had wordsmiths in the office correct my writing to include disposed of. One would not say transported of the waste or stored of the waste, yet people insist upon saying disposed of the waste. Am I wrong here or is it a case of an error becoming the standard through constant incorrect use? The verb dispose can be used either transitively or intransitively. When used transitively, it does not take a preposition. Used intransitively, it often does. As an transitive verb (a verb that governs an object), dispose can mean to place, to put away: The company disposed the waste in drums placed in several buildings. The child disposed the toy soldiers about the carpet and under the table. As an intransitive verb dispose can take a preposition. to dispose with: put into a settled state I want to dispose with this lawsuit once and for all. to dispose of: get rid of We hired Acme Garbage to dispose of our solid waste Dispose can also be used intransitively without a preposition as in the proverb Man proposes; God disposes. When the meaning is to get rid of, dispose needs the of. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Critically discuss the distinction between quality control and quality Essay

Critically discuss the distinction between quality control and quality assurance - Essay Example If the team identifies a problem in a product, it makes the quality control department stop the production of that product for the time being not only to make required changes in the product but also to ensure that the product meets the customers’ demands properly. â€Å"Quality assurance is the process of verifying or determining whether products or services meet or exceed expectations† (Kietzman 2011). It is a process-driven approach towards achieving quality which requires specific steps to identify and attain goals. Quality assurance exceeds the customer expectations through a measurable and accountable process. The quality assurance team examines and tests the product manufacturing process in order to ensure excellence in every stage of the process by identify the defects and taking appropriate steps to remove those defects. Quality control involves such actions that assess and evaluate the manufacturing process of a product, whereas quality assurance involves such activities which ensure adequacy of the product development and quality maintenance processes. Quality control team focuses on finding defects in a product in order to remove them.

TESCO PLC AND THE NATURE OF MARKETS IN WHICH IT OPERATES Essay

TESCO PLC AND THE NATURE OF MARKETS IN WHICH IT OPERATES - Essay Example As one of the biggest players within the UK retail grocery industry, Tesco’s market share was 30.5% back in December 2009. In line with this, Tesco’s close competitor includes: Asda (16.9%), Sainsbury (16.9%), and Morrisons (12.3%). Having only four major players in the market, the market structure of retail grocery industry in UK is oligopoly. Within an oligopolistic market that targets many buyers, the industry is commonly dominated by only a very few numbers of sellers that offer homogenous products to its target consumers (Arnold 2008, p. 512). One of the very few factors that can trigger the development of oligopoly is the fact that a lot of companies are entering into merger and acquisitions as a result of tight market competition caused by globalization. The problem with oligopoly is that a very few number of competitors within the industry can enter into collusion making them able to dictate the market price of heterogenous products they are selling in the market (Gans 2005). Considering that market consequences of a few-firm concentration ration, a lot of economists believe that a market that is characterized by oligopoly is almost similar to the market consequences associated with anti-competitive domestic or international market activity. Although it is possible for players within an oligopoly market to dictate the market price of goods, this is not true in the case of Tesco and its competitors. Since grocery and merchandise retailers are selling homogenous products, its target customers will always have the opportunity to decide where to regularly purchase their weekly consumption of grocery items. In line with this, Tesco’s existing customers can anytime decide to purchase their grocery items from Asda, Sainsbury, Morrison, Waitrose, M&S, Somerfield, Aldi, Lidl, and Netto among other small-scale supermarket throughout the United Kingdom (Tesco 2010 b). There is a strong price competition within the grocery

Cost control analysis Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words - 1

Cost control analysis - Research Paper Example was identified as a key factor contributing to poor cost control measures, leading the management to expend resources that it would have invested in something else. Solutions on these defects in cost management have been identified through the research. Adoption of Just-in-time model will ensure irrelevant costs have been scraped; lean manufacturing model, on the other hand, will reduce the wastage of resources as suggested by one of the cooks in the interview conducted during the research. Results of the recommendation will be evidence on the profit levels and efficiency in operations The level of profit a firm can generate in a given fiscal year not only depends on the sales level, but also it cost control measures. Cost can be defined as the amount incurred by an organization in its pursuit for generating income. This therefore, means that costs are inevitable in any organization that intends to generate income. Costs are classified according to the relationship with the level of production. There are two main types of costs namely; Fixed cost and variable cost. Fixed costs do not vary with the level of production while variable cost varies with the level of production (Evans, 1964). During the internship program at Joe’s Excellent Chinese, these costs were evidenced on the production processes. In this paper, research will be conducted to identify the causes for the cost increase and how it can be controlled for overall benefit of Joe’s Excellent Chinese Cuisine. The problem for this research rotates around cost with its implication in the profit generated in a given fiscal year. Costs are unavoidable, and it is upon the management of Joe’s Excellent Chinese to come up with a strategy that will minimize the cost. Competitors of the firm offer same product (food) at an almost same price. This has created a problem for Joe’s Excellent Chinese since consumers do not see any difference as far as price is concerned. It should be noted that consumers are

[3]   Kids and animals are natural companions. For children with disabilities, that companionship can also include invaluable physical and emotional therapy. Whether its strengthening muscles through horseback riding, feeling motivated to improve while swimming with dolphins or gaining confidence with the help and companionship of a service dog, kids with disabilities can benefit from many different kinds of animals. Animals offer all children the chance to connect to another living being, says Dr. Abhaey Kripalani, Secretary, Minds and Souls Rehabilitation and Research Foundation on Children with Disabilities. But for kids with disabilities, animals can also provide invaluable therapy, he says. Riding a horse, for example, can help a child physically strengthen his or her muscles while also serving as recreation that builds self-esteem [1].   Dr. Anjana Maitra, in her book: Pet Therapy: A New Healing Concept: states that 92% patients hospitalized in coronary care units for angina or heart attack found that those who owned pets were more likely to be alive a year later than those who did not. The study found that only 6% of patients who owned pets died within a year compared with 28% of those who did not own pets. 9 In Thrive, Volume 2, Issue 9, July 2008, A Four-Legged Cure, Heather Grimshaw states that researchers around the world have shown a direct correlation between pet ownership and improved health. [Researchers around the world have shown a direct correlation between pet ownership and improved health] 4 From increased survival rates after heart attacks and surgery to reducing stress, depression, and anxiety, pet ownership may not just improve mental and physical health, it may actually extend a persons life [4].   According to a case report, the use of AAA highlights a Labrador Retriever named Murphy who helped a four year old child with cerebral palsy take her first steps. As the child took slow steps forward, Murphy would respond by taking steps backward, thereby motivating the child to continue taking steps. The child was able to take four steps for the first time in her life [5]. A study of middle-aged schizophrenic patients showed improvement in adaptive functioning during AAT program. 5 An Independent Living Skills tool was then used to rate patients behaviors. It was found that patients health, domestic activities, and social skills improved significantly. [4] [An Independent Living Skills tool was then used to rate patients behaviors] 5 Edward Creagan, MD, a professor at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, has encouraged oncology patients to get pets for the last 30 years. Studies suggest that pets can do more than keep you young at heart, he said during an educational summit called PAWSitive InterAction in Atlanta. They can help keep your heart-and the rest of you-younger and healthier. All animals involved in this therapeutic work should be healthy and of good temperament. Animals should be closely monitored for signs of stress. They also undergo periodic behavioral assessment and if needed, participate in behavior monitoring and rehabilitation program. Optimal environment should be provided to all animals in the form of toys, regular walks or grooming. Good veterinary care should be provided to all the involved animals.[7] [Animal assisted activities, animal-assisted therapy, and resident animal programs should be governed by basic standards, be regularly monitored, and be staffed by appropriately trained personnel.] 7 Pet assisted therapy is a tremendous tool in improving patient communication, self esteem, physical movement, mood and sociability. [ Studies have shown that pet assisted therapy is a tremendous tool in improving patient communication, cognitive function, self esteem, physical movement, mood and sociability] 8 Many children will have disabilities for the rest of their lives, but working with animals can give them the motivation, physical therapy, comfort, companionship and confidence that often lead to real progress in their abilities. [Many children will have disabilities for the rest of their lives, but working with animals can give them the motivation, physical therapy, comfort, companionship and confidence that often leads to real progress in their abilities] 1 The use of animal-assisted therapy has grown tremendously in recent times, particularly in the United States, where there are more than 2,000 programs [3].

Symptoms and Epidemiology of Tuberculosis :: Essays on TB

Abstract: Since one third of the world's population is infected with the bacteria of Tuberculosis, many people would like to know if they are being infected. This is why it is important to know the symptoms and epidemiology. Once people are informed and educated, they will know how to take care of themselves in order to prevent this disease to infect them. This paper will basically talk about who is vulnerable to this disease and what the symptoms are. Furthermore, it will have some studies and quotes. The first step to understanding Tuberculosis is to know exactly what the disease is. According to NOAH ( New York Online Access to Health), ?Having TB infections means that the TB germs are in the body but they are in an inactive state. After TB germs enter the body, in most cases, body defenses control the germs by building a wall around them the way a scab forms over a cut. The germs can stay alive inside these walls for years in an inactive state. While TB germs are inactive, they can?t do damage, and they can?t spread to other people. The person is infected but not sick. He/she probably won?t even know that He/she is infected. Millions of Americans have TB infection. For most of them, the germs will always be inactive.? About one third of the world?s population carry the Tuberculosis bacteria, although most never develop the active tuberculosis disease. Knowing this, many would like to be aware of the symptoms and epidemiology in order to know if they are being infected by this horrible disease. Basically anybody is at risk for contracting Tuberculosis. In terms of age, the two most vulnerable groups for getting infected are seniors and young children. The reason they are more vulnerable to this disease than other people is because their immune systems are not strong. This does not mean that only young children and elders are the 2 only one that will get this disease. According to the Lancet Publishing Group, division of Elsevier Science Ltd, infants with Tuberculosis meningitis continue to have high mortality and morbidity, with deaths happening in about 15% of patients and up to 50% of infants left with serious neurological sequelae.? There are other types of groups that are vulnerable. People with HIV/AIDS or diabetes are also vulnerable to contracting Tuberculosis. This is also due to their weakened immune systems. In terms of gender, both men and women are equally likely to contract this disease. Political Climate of the 1980s Essay

The period starting from 1980 to 1991 was a dawn for the newly implemented international challenges and changes as sponsored by the government of the United States of America. This period was dominated by the immense influence of the Reagan administration. In 1980, Ronald Regan was elected into the presidential post, serving eight years as the president of the United States of America. In addition, this period also determined and strengthened the hegemonic leadership of the American government as the Soviet Union fell towards the end of 1980s, hence declaring the Cold War over. At the start of this period, Reagan implemented economic policies that revolutionized and saved the declining economy of the United States. This set of economic reforms became well-known as â€Å"Reaganomics. † This was comprised of new and aggressive fiscal policies that were meant to decrease the inflation in the American economy, and at the same time steps were taken to further establish the American economy as the strongest in the international arena. The brief span of 1981 to 1986, certain fiscal policies have been implemented in order to keep the economic policies abreast with international changes and to save the American economy from further inflation. In 1981, the Economic Recovery Act was implemented. This was the first Fiscal Policy that was enacted and which had three components all related towards the imposition of tax cuts. In 1982, corporate taxes were imposed. And at the end of 1986, the American economy has undergone three phases, all of which were dominated by changes in the fiscal and monetary policies and expansion. In effect, deficit rate decreased significantly as compared to the economic status experienced during the previous administrations (Looney 1995). In the field of politics, certain changes have also been made. In 1982 and 1985, the involvement of the American government in international struggles became rather pronounced. The Reagan administration opposed the retreat of the American forces during the height of the Vietnam War, and as such, he worked towards the eradication of communist ideas during his presidential term. As such, the Reagan administration took part in defeating the communist forces that were rampant during the period. The American government took active involvement in the military struggles in Cambodia and in the Philippines. In line with this, during the Reagan era, the tensed confrontation brought by the Cold War finally ended. The 40 years of hostility was broken down at the fall of the Soviet Union towards the end of 1980s (Hodges 2000). The breakdown of the Soviet bloc and the end of the Cold War spelled out significant changes to the international order. The Soviet Union, which was the main competitor of the United States in terms of politics, economy and military strength, posted challenge for world leadership for the United States. Hence, at the fall of the Soviet bloc, the post was left for the American government alone. Thus, at the end of the Cold War, the United States government was prompted to make certain actions that strengthened their influence in other smaller countries. Communist insurgents were greatly weakened during this period, and as such, capitalist motives were pushed forward. Towards the end of this era, more economic policies were implemented that were geared towards globalization and liberalization. With the immense influence and power that the American government posted, most of the countries – developed and developing countries – followed the suit after America. Thus, this period was largely highlighted by the increasing influence of the United States of America towards the establishment of a globalized community which is still prevailing during this generation.

William Faulkner Essay

Gabriel Arcia 9 Honors English Mr. Settle April 18, 2010 William Faulkner’s Accomplishments William Faulkner stood 5’6† tall, but was a giant in the realm of Americans (Padgett). He is a great image of literature up to this date for his many contributions to American literary works. He has helped humanity discover how important literature and art is in America. He had accomplished more artistically over a decade than most writers in a lifetime (Padgett). Between the years 1927-1934, he had books published every year (Reuben). Many of his greatest novels were As I Lay Dying; Light in America, and above all, Absalom, Absalom. William Faulkner was known as one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers in history. He had special talents in drawing and writing poetry. His famous books made him president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and he received the National Book Award for A Fable (Hoffman 15). William Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi (Hoffman 13; Polk). William Clark Faulkner’s parents named him after his great-grandfather (Padgett; Polk). His parent’s names were Murry and Maud Faulkner. His three siblings were Murry, Jr. , John, and Dean, with William being the oldest. In September 22, 1902, when Faulkner was only five years old, he moved to Oxford at the urging of his father and stayed there for most of his life (Hoffman 13; Padgett; Polk; Reuben). This is where he received his baptized name, which was William Cuthbert Faulkner (Reuben). In the sixth grade, Faulkner grew bored with his studies and demonstrated his artistic talents (Padgett). In 1914, Phil Stone became Faulkner’s best friend and encouraged Faulkner in becoming a great author and writer. Hoffman 13; Padgett). While William Faulkner loved being an author, Stone was schooled at Ole Miss and Yale and eventually became a lawyer (Padgett; Reuben). In September 1919, Faulkner enrolled at the University of Mississippi, but never got a college degree (Frenz; Hoffman 13; Padgett; Reuben). Part of the main reason why Faulkner never received a degree was that Mississippi was one of the poorest states dur ing the time of the Great Depression (Padgett). He later dropped out after three semesters in November 1920. School was never on Faulkner’s mind. It was mostly his writings and artwork that inspired him day by day. Faulkner’s childhood sweetheart was a young girl named Estelle Oldham, who was very popular and attended many dances and parties (Padgett; Reuben). There were many barriers between them and the reason for that is Faulkner’s mother sent him to school and this opened a door for someone else to fall in love with Estelle. The man who eventually fell in love with Estelle was Cornell Franklin. They married in Oxford on April 18th, 1918; however, in 1929 Estelle divorced Franklin and married William Faulkner on June 20th (Padgett; Reuben). In 1931, Faulkner’s first daughter was born but died nine days later, but two years after his first daughter’s death, his second daughter was born and her name was Jill (Reuben). One of the best-known authors that influenced William Faulkner was Mark Twain. Mark Twain’s famous novels were The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn (Polk). Faulkner was inspired by Twain’s famous novels and they led him to become an author. Faulkner’s first book published was The Marble Faun in 1924 (Hoffman 13). Other than being an author, Faulkner had a temporary job in a New York bookstore and the New Orleans Newspaper (Frenz). Faulkner took an application to join the U. S. Air Force too. In his application, Faulkner changed his name to Finchley, lived in the county of Middlesex, England, birth date was May 25, 1898, and his current civil occupation was student (Reuben). His application in the U. S. Air Force was denied. He was not allowed to join because they thought Faulkner was too short. Faulkner then decided to join the Canadian Royal Air Force. He took part in World War I during this phase of his life. (Hoffman 13). He was later discharged from his position in the Royal Air Force, but received a commission as the honorable second lieutenant on July 8, 1918. In 1932, Faulkner entered Hollywood as a motion-picture scriptwriter. This is where he worked for the 20th Century Fox and Universal Studios (Polk; Reuben). Faulkner’s tones in his novels were usually serious and even tragic (Polk). Faulkner’s fiction books discuss issues on sex, class, race relation, and relations with nature. In 1948, Intruder in the Dust was the most outspoken moral evaluation of relationships between blacks and whites (Frenz). Critics denounced his books with their emphasis on violence and abnormality. One of William Faulkner’s famous quotes is, â€Å"The past is never dead; it’s not even past† (qtd. n Reuben). In 1957, William Faulkner took two semester classes as Writer-in-Residence in the University of Virginia (Hoffman 15). In 1948, Faulkner was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters (Polk; Reuben). In 1949, William Faulkner received a Nobel Prize in literature and accepted it in December of 1950 (Hoffman 14; Re uben). William Faulkner was given the National Book Award for his collected stories in 1951. In 1955, he won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for A Fable (Hoffman 15). One of William Faulkner’s brilliant and best novels was The Sanctuary. His last book before he died was The Reivers and it received another. In July 6, 1962, William Faulkner died of a heart attack in Oxford at the age of 65 (Padgett; Reuben). Right after his death, Faulkner was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Reivers (Hoffman 15). One of his quotes in the Nobel Prize speech was, â€Å"The young man or women writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agency and the sweat† (qtd. in Padgett). William Faulkner has inspired American literature and history. He is known throughout the world, because he believed in his true dreams. He traveled from Japan to Nogan and many more places in the world to attend conferences and lecture many classes (Hoffman 15). Millions of people have failed once in their lives, but William Faulkner did not let failure get into his way. On a nice summer day, Faulkner was injured by a fall from a horse (Padgett). He did not let that fall stop him from his literary works. In every book Faulkner published, he reminded his readers of his universal values, which are love, honor, pity, pride, compassion, and sacrifice (Polk). Of course, there were many critiques on his books and genres, but he also had thousands of fans that enjoyed his books and his amazing artwork. Faulkner was raised in a normal family like everyone else is raised in the world, but he decided to come into it and make a difference in it. He pursued his dreams until he finally got hold of it and used it to change the world. A lot of people do not notice Faulkner’s hard work and effort, but one day everyone will realize the importance of this universal figure and appreciate William Faulkner for his amazing contributions to American literature.
